The Role of the College Success Coach: Three Crucial Benefits for Students

According to Bankrate.com, approximately 60% of college freshmen will earn a degree in 6 years, higher for public institutions and lower for private nonprofit institutions. This is an expensive phenomenon, costing students $68,000/year or $136,000 for two extra years in lost income and college tuition/expenses.  Less than a quarter (23.5%) will earn a degree in 4 years, and less than half (49.8%) will earn a bachelor's degree.

How a College Success Coach Benefits Students

  1. Assist high school students with choosing the right major and college.

In doing so, students are more likely to graduate in 4 years, have higher grade point averages, and be employed or accepted to graduate school by the time they graduate.

2. Assist students with transitioning from receptive or extrinsically motivated learners to active or intrinsically motivated consumers of knowledge.

How do you teach a student to make the shift? Answer: You don’t. Instead, you create opportunities or experiences that cultivate intrinsic motivation and the desire to learn more. The college success coach’s job is to identify the most appropriate experiences. The best strategy is to start small and grow as your student client’s confidence grows.

3. Lifting the veil on the college-going and success process and providing parents and students with much-needed relief from the anxiety often associated with transitioning from high school to college.

Three strategies to alleviate this anxiety include: providing a game plan, assisting with achieving milestones in that game plan, and putting the pending college experience into perspective.

This last strategy is important because students have been taught this is their life's most important decision. Yes, it’s important, but there are plenty of opportunities for students to change direction.

The key is to make decisions like what major to choose and which college to attend using the expertise of a professional college success coach.  A coach can greatly improve a student client’s trajectory, resulting in an improved educational experience and graduation in 4 years, potentially saving tens of thousands of dollars for students and families.
